Vegan in Rhosneigr: Vegan in Rhosneigr

Vegan in Rhosneigr

People assume a little surf village on Anglesey means chips or nothing. Not round here. You can eat properly plant-based from breakfast to pudding without leaving the village.

Breakfast and brunch

Cafe Notos, 4 Marine Terrace, High Street

Start here. There's no booking, so get in early on a wet weekend. Vegan dishes are marked VE, and recent ones have included:

  • The Heavenly vegan: a Quorn sausage, beans, tomato, mushroom, hash brown, kale, scrambled tofu and tiger bread toast, with rayu as an add-on.
  • A vegan breakfast bap with Quorn sausage, avocado and hash brown.
  • Tofu on toast. The Notos famous avocado on sourdough, the bouji beans, the granola and both yoghurt bowls all come VE available.
  • At lunch, the loaded Korean BBQ fries are VE, and the pie and fries line includes a vegan sausage roll.
  • The smoothies use almond milk as their base, and there's alternative milk for coffee.

Mojo's, 7 Marine Terrace, High Street

  • The Vegan Breakfast has roasted cherry vine tomatoes, Heinz beans, mushrooms, spinach, smashed avocado and toasted sourdough.
  • Mojo's also prints "VG" on cheese dishes, so don't go by that tag. Look for the words "vegan available". At lunch, the mushroom and spinach linguini is marked VGA, and the crepes, pancakes and shakes say "Vegan and gluten free available".
  • In the evening, the hummus, sauté mushrooms and garlic bread are marked vegan available.

The Surf Cafe

Its menus page promises a vegan breakfast and vegan garlic and thyme soya strips, and says the staff will talk you through the options.

Lunch and dinner

Sandy Mount House, High Street

A proper dedicated vegan menu, which changes with the seasons. Recent dishes have included:

  • Starters: vegan tacos with spiced mince and guacamole, a mushroom and vegetable spring roll with satay, or a cous cous and sweet potato salad.
  • Mains: a tofu poke bowl, miso-glazed courgette with homemade katsu, or chestnut mushroom and puy lentil tagliatelle.
  • Sides: skin-on fries or triple-cooked chips, or a dressed salad.
  • Puddings: cinnamon churros, lemon panna cotta with blackberry coulis, or Mario's sorbets.

The Oyster Catcher, Maelog Lake

The menu marks PB for plant-based and suitable for vegans, and PBA for plant-based available. Recent dishes have included:

  • PB: veg Thai red curry, wild mushroom parfait with sourdough toast, fennel and onion pakoras, Nocellara olives, thick-cut chips or skin-on fries, and curry sauce as an add-on.
  • PBA: the bread board, sourdough, trofie pasta, new potatoes, green beans and most of the ice creams.
  • Puddings: the chocolate pot or the coconut panna cotta with rhubarb.
  • They have oat, soya and coconut milk. In Will's Bar, Dawn's homemade flapjack is plant-based.

Summer only: Dreamboat

A restored 1968 Mercedes van making organic sourdough pizza in the dunes at Porth Tyn Tywyn, along the coastal path. In their words, they've "historically served vegetarian and vegan food only", which is still the heart of it, though they now use some meat. There's plant-based milk for every coffee. If the Dreamboat Bowl is on the board, order it without the feta: quinoa, green harissa, garden courgette and kale, and homemade houmous. It runs for a few weeks in late summer. Watch their Instagram, @dreamboat1968, for dates.

Worth the drive: Dylan's, Menai Bridge

Over on the Menai Strait, the restaurant looks out across the water. Its menu marks vegan dishes VG, and recent dishes have included:

  • Angharad's tacos (VG, GF), as a starter or a main
  • A superfood salad and Dylan's poke bowl, both VG
  • Dylan's bhaji burger (VG): crispy onion and sweet potato bhajis with mango ketchup
  • Build-your-own pizza. Vegan cheese is on the toppings list, and the garlic and garlic-and-tomato bases are marked VG.
  • Sides: skinny chips, chunky chips, seasoned fries, chilli broccoli and mixed leaf salad are all marked VG.
  • Pudding: sticky toffee pudding, with a vegan option available.

Worth knowing

  • Scarlett's, the chippy, has nothing labelled vegan on its menu, so ask before you order.
  • Notos, Mojo's and Sandy Mount all ask you to tell staff about any allergies before ordering. Menus change with the seasons, so always check allergens with staff.
  • For a bigger plant-based shop, the nearest supermarkets are Tesco Extra (with a Free From range), Asda and Lidl in Holyhead, and Asda and Lidl in Llangefni.
  • For reviews and photos from other vegan visitors, see Rhosneigr on HappyCow.
